You can find the sandals here

Introduction

ZuZu is one of the more unique brands in the barefoot world because it didn't start as a footwear company trying to capitalize on the barefoot movement. Instead, it started with a simple idea: create durable, minimalist sandals using recycled and upcycled materials.

Their original Origin sandal featured a recycled tire outsole, soft leather laces, and a design philosophy centered around sustainability, natural movement, and durability. Over the years, ZuZu has steadily expanded the lineup, introducing new outsole options, alternative strap systems, vegan-friendly models, and most recently the Pere Chelsea Boot.

Today, ZuZu offers one of the more diverse lineups in the barefoot sandal space. From the ultra-minimal Flow to the rugged Flex, the beginner-friendly Drift, the everyday Groove, and now a full leather Chelsea boot, there is a model for almost every type of barefoot enthusiast.

Having owned and tested the Origin, Flow, Flex, Groove, Drift, and Pere, I wanted to put together a complete brand roundup covering every current model, who it is best for, and where each one fits into the growing barefoot footwear landscape.

What Makes ZuZu Different?

The barefoot sandal market has become crowded in recent years, but ZuZu still stands out for a few reasons.

The first is sustainability. Long before sustainability became a popular marketing buzzword, ZuZu was experimenting with recycled and upcycled materials. The original sandals used recycled tire outsoles and focused heavily on minimizing waste.

The second is customization. Many sandal brands offer a single strap system and call it a day. ZuZu offers multiple strap options, interchangeable laces, leather and vegan alternatives, and enough variety that most people can find a setup that works for them.

The third is accessibility. Compared to many premium barefoot sandal brands, ZuZu remains relatively affordable while still delivering quality materials and craftsmanship. They ship to most countries worldwide and the US buying experience is especially easy.

Finally, there is the simple fact that they continue innovating. Rather than releasing the same sandal year after year, they have expanded into multiple sandal categories and recently entered the barefoot boot market with the Pere Chelsea.

Strap Systems and Customization

One of the things I appreciate most about ZuZu is their interchangeable strap system.

Some people prefer leather straps. Others want synthetic performance straps for hiking, running, or water use. Some want something soft and casual for everyday wear. ZuZu allows you to tailor the sandal to your preferences.

The original leather laces remain some of the softest sandal laces I have ever worn. Many huarache-style sandals require an adjustment period before the straps soften up, but the ZuZu leather straps felt comfortable almost immediately.

This flexibility also improves sustainability. If the sole still has life left in it, you can simply replace the straps instead of replacing the entire sandal.

ZuZu Origin Review

Price

Originally around 99$

Best For

Minimalists, sustainability enthusiasts, everyday wear

The Origin is where it all began.

Built around the original recycled tire outsole and paired with incredibly soft leather laces, the Origin embodied everything that made ZuZu special.

The outsole felt almost indestructible. While many minimalist sandals prioritize being lightweight above all else, the Origin prioritized durability. These sandals felt like they could survive years of abuse while still maintaining the flexibility expected from barefoot footwear.

The leather laces were equally impressive. To this day, they remain among the softest sandal straps I have worn.

The Origin was simple. No gimmicks. No excessive technology. Just a durable, sustainable barefoot sandal that worked.

Pros

  • Extremely durable outsole

  • Soft leather straps

  • Sustainable design

  • Classic huarache simplicity

Cons

  • Less refined than newer models

  • Not as lightweight as some current offerings

  • Can get floppy if not laced tight enough.

ZuZu Flow Review

Price

$79

Stack Height

6mm

Weight

140g

Best For

Ground feel, hiking, running, experienced barefoot users

The Flow is my favorite option for pure barefoot feel.

If you are the type of person who wants to feel every contour of the terrain beneath your feet, the Flow is where you should start.

At only 6mm thick, it is one of the most minimal sandals available today. The combination of low stack height, flexibility, and lightweight construction creates an experience that feels incredibly close to being barefoot.

What surprised me most was how secure the sandal becomes once properly adjusted. I personally like tying my sandals relatively tight, and when dialed in, the Flow stays remarkably secure during hiking, running, and everyday use.

For experienced barefoot enthusiasts, this may be the most exciting model in the lineup.

Due to its very thin outsole, we suggest wearing it tighter on your foot to be a true extension.

Pros

  • Incredible ground feel

  • Lightweight

  • Extremely flexible

  • Secure once adjusted properly

  • Excellent for running and hiking

Cons

  • Minimal protection

  • May be too thin for beginners

ZuZu Flex Review

Price

$89 /

Stack Height

10.5mm

Weight

156g

Best For

Trails, distance running, rugged adventures

The Flex takes everything people love about the Flow and adds more protection, more grip, and more versatility.

This is the model I reach for when the terrain becomes more demanding.

The thicker outsole provides noticeably more protection underfoot while maintaining enough flexibility to still feel like a barefoot sandal. The grip is also excellent and inspires confidence on trails, loose terrain, and uneven surfaces.

If I were heading out for a long hike, technical trail run, or full day adventure, the Flex would likely be my first choice.

It strikes an excellent balance between barefoot freedom and practical protection.

Pros

  • Better protection than Flow

  • Excellent grip

  • Great for trails

  • Comfortable for long distances

Cons

  • Less ground feel than Flow

  • Slightly heavier

ZuZu Groove Review

Price

$99 /

Stack Height

10mm

Weight

154g

Best For

Everyday wear, travel, casual use

The Groove fills an important role in the lineup.

While the Flow is built for minimalists and the Flex is built for adventure, the Groove feels designed for everyday life.

The vegan leather footbed gives it a more refined feel underfoot and makes it particularly comfortable for long days of walking, travel, and casual wear.

This is the sandal I would recommend to someone who wants a barefoot sandal but does not necessarily want the most minimal or most rugged option.

Instead, they want something comfortable, versatile, and easy to wear day after day.

Pros

  • Comfortable footbed

  • Great for travel

  • Easy everyday wear

  • Balanced design

Cons

  • Not as minimal as Flow

  • Not as trail-focused as Flex

ZuZu Drift Review

Price

$99 /

Stack Height

9mm

Weight

170g

Best For

People who dislike toe posts, casual wear, travel

The Drift is probably the most unique sandal in the current lineup.

Instead of using the traditional huarache toe-post design, the Drift utilizes a three-strap configuration that eliminates the strap between the toes entirely.

For some people, this alone makes it the best model ZuZu offers.

Not everyone enjoys a toe post, and the Drift provides a barefoot alternative without sacrificing comfort or natural movement.

We brought the Drift along on adventures around the Dead Sea, and it performed exceptionally well. The secure straps, flexible construction, and comfortable footbed made it easy to wear in one of the most unique environments on the planet.

This is a unique configuration which is hard to find on the barefoot market.

If you've avoided huarache sandals because of the toe post, the Drift may be exactly what you're looking for.

Pros

  • No toe post

  • Easy adjustment

  • Comfortable immediately

  • Great travel sandal

Cons

  • Slightly heavier

  • Less traditional huarache feel

ZuZu Pere Chelsea Boot Review

Price

$180 /

Best For

Everyday wear, travel, casual outfits

For years, people wondered whether ZuZu would ever move beyond sandals.

The answer arrived with the Pere Chelsea Boot.

Available in both black and brown, the Pere combines a premium leather upper with a wide toe box, flexible sole, and classic Chelsea styling.

The result is one of the better-looking barefoot Chelsea boots currently available.

The biggest surprise came from Sara.

Over the years, she has tested numerous barefoot Chelsea boots from different brands. Yet after spending time in the Pere, it quickly became her favorite.

In fact, it surpassed the original PaperKrane Chelsea that she had previously considered her top choice.

The comfort is excellent. The shape is natural without looking overly wide. The leather feels premium. And the overall design strikes a balance between barefoot functionality and everyday style that many brands struggle to achieve.

Finding a truly good barefoot Chelsea boot is surprisingly difficult.

ZuZu nailed it.

Pros

  • Stylish design

  • Wide toe box

  • Comfortable fit

  • High-quality leather

  • Easy slip-on design

Cons

  • Not fully waterproof

  • More expensive than the sandals

Tabi Socks

ZuZu also offers a pair of Merino Tabi Socks, designed specifically to pair with their sandals while extending their usability into cooler weather.

So, if you are crazy about, you're sandals and want to wear them all year round these are for you.

Made from 60% premium merino wool, these socks naturally regulate temperature, wick moisture, resist odors, and remain comfortable across a wide range of conditions, making them an excellent choice for hiking, travel, or simply cooler evenings around camp. The split-toe (Tabi) design, inspired by traditional Japanese work socks, works seamlessly with huarache-style sandals, allowing you to enjoy the warmth of merino wool without sacrificing the secure fit of your sandals.

A small amount of elastic helps the socks retain their shape over time, creating a comfortable fit that holds up well after repeated use.

Shipping, Returns, and Exchanges

ZuZu now ships worldwide from their US warehouse and has improved availability for North American customers through their U.S. warehouse.

The company currently offers a 60-day return and exchange policy and free exchanges for US orders, the US buying experience is especially easy with free shipping, simple exchanges and fast delivery across the country which is especially useful for first-time sandal buyers who may need help dialing in sizing.+

As always, I recommend printing the sizing templates whenever possible before ordering.

Final Thoughts

What impresses me most about ZuZu is not any single sandal.

It is the evolution of the brand.

They started with a simple recycled tire sandal and have gradually expanded into one of the most complete barefoot sandal lineups available today. Along the way they have maintained their commitment to sustainability, affordability, and natural movement.

If you want maximum ground feel, choose the Flow.

If you want the best adventure sandal, choose the Flex.

If you want an everyday sandal, choose the Groove.

If you dislike toe posts, choose the Drift.

If you want a stylish barefoot Chelsea boot, choose the Pere.

And if you ever get the chance to find an original Origin, you'll get to experience the sandal that started it all.
